A recent study published in The Medical Journal of Malaysia analyzed the impact of age on procedural characteristics, complications, and short-term outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of total chronic total occlusion (CTO). This study included 440 patients between 2012 and 2016, who underwent PCI for at least one CTO. It was found that procedural success was independent of age. Moreover, there was no significant interaction between age and procedural success. While complication rates were low in the both groups, with no difference in statistical significance. The results indicated that in an aging society patients, with severe coronary artery disease and chronical total occlusions, an interventional therapy should be used more intensively. It was stated that these therapies are safe and feasible.
